Poovar Ayurveda Village
Imagine waking to soft light filtering through coconut palms, the quiet lap of backwaters just beyond your cottage, and no schedule beyond healing. This is Poovar Ayurveda Village.
Set on a private island reached by boat — 25 acres surrounded entirely by backwaters, just south of Trivandrum — the village is a dedicated Ayurveda retreat within the larger Poovar Island Resort. What sets it apart is focus: rather than a spa offering Ayurveda alongside other amenities, this is a genuine healing sanctuary where every element — the doctors, the therapies, the food, the cottages, the rhythm of the day — is oriented around your treatment.
You’ll be cared for by a team of three experienced Ayurvedic physicians and twenty trained therapists, working from a 20,000 sq. ft. dedicated therapy centre. Your treatment plan will be built specifically for you after an in-depth consultation on arrival — never a pre-packaged program. The 6,000-year-old system of Ayurveda is practiced here in its traditional form, with the personalization that makes it actually work.
Whether you’re coming for rejuvenation, detoxification through Panchakarma, relief from a chronic condition, or simply to reset from the pace of modern life, Poovar Ayurveda Village offers something increasingly rare: the space, time, and expertise for real healing to happen.

History
Kerala has been the home of Ayurveda for thousands of years — this is where the tradition was preserved, refined, and passed down through generations of physicians. Poovar Ayurveda Village exists to keep that tradition alive in an era when much of what’s marketed as Ayurveda has been diluted into spa treatments.
The philosophy here is straightforward: real healing comes from restoring balance in the body’s natural functions, supported by lifestyle changes that align with how the body actually works. The treatments are traditional. The doctors are experienced. The setting — a private island of backwaters — gives you the physical distance from daily life that deep healing requires.
Treatment
Effective Ayurveda isn’t picking from a menu — it’s a physician understanding your body first, then designing what you need. Every plan at Poovar Ayurveda Village is built from scratch after your initial consultation.
Initial Consultation
On arrival, you’ll spend over 90 minutes with our resident physicians. Using traditional Ayurvedic examination alongside a bilingual (English/German) health questionnaire, your physician analyzes your dosha imbalances, determines your constitution (Prakriti), and builds your complete schedule — therapies, diet, and any prescribed internal medicines, tailored specifically to you.
Treatment Programs
- Rejuvenation Therapy — 2 weeks minimum
- Panchakarma / Body Purification — 2-3 weeks for effectiveness
- Stress Management Therapy — 1 week minimum
- General Relaxation Programme — 1 week minimum
- Body Immunization Therapy
- Weight Loss Program
- Treatment for Degenerative Joint Problems
Most programs open with Abhyangam — a 60-minute full-body massage — combined with supporting therapies chosen for your condition: Ilakizhi (herbal hot application with medicated leaf bags), Shirodhara (medicated oil streamed on the forehead), Lepanam (external herbal paste), Nasyam (nasal medication), Mukhalepanam (herbal facial pack), and steam bath / herbal scrub shower. Intensity builds through the middle of the program and tapers toward the end — the classical Ayurvedic arc of preparing, treating, and stabilizing the body.
Daily Monitoring & Exit Plan
Your condition is assessed daily before treatments — your physician observes how your body responds and adjusts as needed. Toward the end, a comprehensive exit consultation summarizes your progress and hands you a written plan of diet, lifestyle, and home remedies tailored to your constitution. If continuing internal medicines are prescribed, these can be arranged to take home. The benefits of your stay should extend well past your time at the resort.
Accommodation
Poovar Ayurveda Village offers 31 spacious Ayurveda cottages designed specifically for guests undergoing treatment programs. Each cottage features tile flooring, an outdoor shower, and decor that reflects the peaceful character of the village setting. A dedicated free-flowing swimming pool, two on-site Ayurveda restaurants, and a small dressmaker’s shop for traditional attire are all part of the village itself — everything you need is within a short walk.

Supporting Team
Twenty trained therapists (12 female, 8 male) work alongside the physicians to deliver your treatments — the hands-on craft that turns a prescription into actual healing. Your physician monitors your progress daily and adjusts the plan as your body responds.
Yoga and Meditiation
Yoga complements the Ayurvedic treatments — the practices work together on the same imbalances from different angles. Daily group classes run from 7:00 to 8:30 am at the resort’s yoga centre, a 2,000 sq. ft. space overlooking the backwaters with capacity for up to 30 guests.
Sessions are led by Ms. Arya S. Vijayan, our resident Yoga Guru. She holds an International Yoga TTC (Yoga Alliance) certification and a Yoga Guru TTC from Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Madom, along with a Diploma in Yoga Teaching from the State Resource Centre and Art of Living certification. Classes focus on Hatha Yoga, with poses and breathing practices selected in coordination with your prescribing physician.
Individual yoga sessions and private meditation sessions can be arranged by prior appointment for guests with specific health needs or experience levels. A personalized take-home yoga plan can also be prepared for you, so the practice continues beyond your stay.
Medicines
Every oil and medicine used at Poovar Ayurveda Village is 100% herbal, with no synthetic additions. They come from reputable Kerala pharmacies that follow GMP certifications and ISO 9000:2001 standards — combining traditional preparation methods with modern quality control.
All therapies and medicines used during your program are included in your package at no extra cost. If your physician recommends continuing certain internal medicines after you leave, these can be arranged for you to take home (at additional cost) to support your continued healing.
The resort also maintains a small medicinal herb garden on the property. Guided tours can be arranged for guests interested in the plants used in classical Ayurvedic preparations, and educational sessions on medicines and herbs are available on request.
Food
Food matters as much as the treatments — this is a core principle of Ayurveda. Two dedicated Ayurveda restaurants, Ayushya and Prana, serve cuisine prepared according to classical Ayurvedic dietary principles, tailored to what your physician has prescribed for your dosha and treatment plan.
Meals are presented as curated daily selections aligned with your prescribed diet — so you can eat freely within your plan without ordering from a menu at every meal. The kitchen, led by Chef Jaypal, has been trained specifically for Ayurvedic cooking — this isn’t hotel food with turmeric added. Delicious vegetarian dishes are prepared from vegetables and medicinal leaves selected for their curative properties. A small selection of produce comes from the resort itself; the rest is sourced fresh from local Kerala markets. Diet is overseen in close coordination with Dr. Sangeetha and Dr. Veena, ensuring what’s on your plate directly serves the treatment plan the physician has built for you.
Weekly Ayurveda Cookery Classes let you learn how to continue Ayurvedic cooking at home — a natural extension of the treatment experience and something guests often value long after their stay ends.
Ayurveda packages
Poovar Ayurveda Village works with the classical principle that every guest needs a different program — there’s no single treatment approach that suits everyone. Your physician decides the right program for you after the arrival consultation, based on your constitution, current condition, and health goals.
The programs available:
Rejuvenation Programme — For guests seeking overall renewal and vitality. Two weeks minimum recommended for meaningful results.
Panchakarma Programme — The classical deep-detoxification protocol. Two to three weeks required for effectiveness. This is Ayurveda’s most rigorous cleansing approach and cannot be shortcut.
Stress Management Programme — For guests dealing with the physical and mental toll of modern life. One week minimum stay.
General Relaxation Programme — A gentler entry point for guests new to Ayurveda or with limited time. One week minimum.
Body Immunization Therapy — Focused on strengthening the body’s natural defenses.
Weight Loss Programme — Structured around Ayurvedic principles of metabolism and digestion (Agni).
Degenerative Joint Programme — Targeted care for arthritis-spectrum and related musculoskeletal conditions.
How Programs Are Structured
Poovar runs programs at two intensities — one designed for shorter-staying guests and one for longer stays. Both use authentic, traditional Kerala Ayurveda protocols, but the depth and pacing differ.
Short-stay programs use a fixed treatment schedule that produces immediate, tangible effects — designed for guests who want to feel results within days.
Long-stay programs (typically 7 to 21+ days) follow a more demanding progression. Treatment intensity builds gradually, deepens through the middle of the program, and tapers toward the end. Your physician can extend or modify the program duration based on how your body is responding.
Most treatment days begin with Abhyangam — a 60-minute full-body oil massage covering the head, neck, shoulders, face, and full body. Depending on your prescription, this is combined with therapies like Ilakizhi (herbal poultice application), Shirodhara (medicated oil poured on the forehead), Lepanam (herbal paste), Nasyam (nasal therapy), Mukhalepanam (herbal facial pack), and steam or herbal scrub showers.
Your general condition is reviewed daily before treatments are administered. If adjustments are needed, they’re made in real time based on how you’re responding — not on a preset schedule.
What’s Included
Every program includes the arrival consultation, all prescribed treatments and medicines used during your stay, personalized Ayurvedic meals, and individual yoga and meditation sessions. On the final days, you’ll receive a detailed exit consultation and a written plan covering diet, lifestyle, and home remedies to continue the benefits after you return home.
